Bill Gates Urges Nigeria to Keep Momentum in Polio Eradication Efforts

During a recent media roundtable in Lagos, Bill Gates, Chair of the Gates Foundation, urged Nigeria’s government to maintain its commitment to eradicating polio despite global funding challenges. Gates emphasized that Nigeria is critical to the global effort to end polio, with the virus still circulating, especially in states like Sokoto, Kano, Katsina, and Kebbi.

While acknowledging the progress made, including a 40% reduction in polio detections in Q1 2025, Gates stressed that Nigeria must continue its strong collaboration with partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI). He also highlighted the importance of addressing public doubts about vaccine safety and the emergence of new polio variants through direct community engagement, transparent communication, and local leadership.

Gates underscored the need for robust routine immunization to sustain a polio-free world and praised the efforts of the Nigerian government, UNICEF, WHO, and other partners in improving vaccination coverage. He also emphasized the role of surveillance in detecting and responding quickly to outbreaks.

Polio remains a threat, especially to children under five, but Gates is confident that, with continued investments and partnerships, the world can achieve a polio-free future.

Gates, who is currently in Nigeria for a series of meetings with government officials, also participated in the Goalkeepers Nigeria event, focusing on Africa’s future innovation and health solutions.
