HEARTBURN AND THE CAUSES
Heartburn is a common condition characterized by a burning sensation in the chest and throat. It occurs when stomach acid flows back up into the esophagus, causing discomfort and pain.
CAUSES OF HEARTBURN
1. Weakened Lower Esophageal Sphincter: The Lower Esophageal Sphincter is a muscle that separates the esophagus and stomach. If it becomes weak, stomach acid can flow back up into the esophagus.
2. Overeating or Eating Too Quickly: Consuming large or heavy meals can put pressure on the Lower Esophageal Sphincter, causing it to relax and allow stomach acid to flow back up.
3. Certain Foods and Drinks: Consuming foods and drinks that are high in fat, citrus, or caffeine can trigger heartburn.
4. Obesity: Excess weight can put pressure on the stomach, causing stomach acid to flow back up into the esophagus.
5. Pregnancy: Hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause the Lower Esophageal Sphincter to relax, leading to heartburn.
6. Smoking: Smoking can weaken the Lower Esophageal Sphincter and reduce saliva production, which can exacerbate heartburn.
