IMPORTANCE OF HYDRATION IN THE OLDER ADULT POPULATION

IMPORTANCE OF HYDRATION IN THE OLDER ADULT POPULATION

IMPORTANCE OF HYDRATION IN THE OLDER ADULT POPULATION

Hydration is crucial for older adults due to:

* DECREASED THIRST SENSATION: Older adults may not feel thirsty, leading to inadequate fluid intake.

* CHANGES IN BODY COMPOSITION: Older adults have a higher proportion of body fat, which can lead to dehydration.

* MEDICATION SIDE EFFECTS: Certain PPO cause dehydration as a side effect.

* DECREASED MOBILITY: Older adults may have limited mobility, making it harder to access fluids.

* UNDERLYING MEDICAL CONDITIONS: Conditions like diabetes, kidney disease, and heart failure can increase dehydration risk.

* IMPAIRED COGNITIVE FUNCTION: Older adults with dementia or Alzheimer's may forget to drink fluids.

* SENSORY CHANGES: Older adults may experience decreased sensation of thirst or dry mouth.

* HORMONAL CHANGES: Hormonal fluctuations can affect fluid balance.

* INCREASED RISK OF URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS: Dehydration can increase the risk of UTIs in older adults.

* WORSENING OF EXISTING CONDITIONS: Dehydration can exacerbate conditions like constipation, falls, and heat stroke.

It's essential for older adults to drink plenty of fluids, monitor urine output, and consume hydrating foods to stay properly hydrated.
