WHAT IS HEPATITIS D?
Hepatitis D is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis D virus. It is an uncommon but very serious type of viral hepatitis.
HERE ARE THE KEY POINTS
-REQUIRES HEPATITIS B TO EXIST: Hepatitis D cannot infect a person on its own. It only occurs in people who are already infected with hepatitis B virus, because Hepatitis D Virus needs Hepatitis B Virus surface protein to survive and multiply.
-TRANSMISSION: Similar to hepatitis B, through contact with infected blood, unprotected sex, contaminated needles, and from mother to child during birth.
TYPES OF INFECTION:
-CO-INFECTION: Getting hepatitis B and D at the same time.
-SUPERINFECTION: Someone who already has chronic hepatitis B gets hepatitis D. This is usually more dangerous.
