Zelensky Cuts South Africa Trip Short After Deadly Russian Strikes on Kyiv

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has ended his visit to South Africa early following a deadly Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv that killed at least eight people and injured over 70. The overnight assault, one of the deadliest in recent weeks, damaged 13 locations in the capital and left several people trapped under rubble.

The Ukrainian air force reported that Russia launched 215 projectiles — 70 missiles and 145 drones — with 112 intercepted. Despite Kyiv’s strong air defenses, this strike caused significant destruction and casualties, intensifying concerns about civilian safety.

Zelensky, after meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, vowed to return home immediately. He renewed his call for an unconditional halt to Russian airstrikes, criticizing Russia for continuing attacks despite Ukraine’s commitment to a ceasefire over the past 44 days.

The attack comes amid rising tensions between Ukraine and U.S. leaders, as former President Trump criticized Zelensky’s resistance to peace terms involving recognition of Russian control over Crimea. Meanwhile, Russian forces also struck Kharkiv and other regions, as the conflict rages on.
